The Bands of the "Zoo Bar"

More than two decades ago, former "Zoo Bar" owner Teri Brown, asked her friend saxaphonist Sidney Banda, to put together a group of musicians to play at the Zoo Bar. Sidney and his various players brought blues, jazz, motown and pop music to the bar. People danced in the aisle and made Thursday nights a must show. Sidney still sits in from time to time, including the open "Blues Jam", but his band has grown to more musicians than the stage can hold. Music at the bar has taken many forms since then, including a one man band, solo performers, musical groups and at times a DJ. Whatever the form, one tradition has remained at the Zoo Bar (with rare exceptions) there is no cover charge for the live music.
The talent and musical focus now is predominantly "Blues". This has drawn increasingly skilled and respected performers to the line up. Althogh the line up of bands performing Friday and Saturday nights remain basiclly the same from month to month, new bands are debuted on months with a fifth Friday or Saturday. Our most recent addition to the line up is "HOT RODS and OLD GAS", now performing the first Friday of each month. |
